Jim Fort’s Walnut / Shiva VII
This wood has special meaning to me as it belonged to Jim Fort. Jim, his wife Cathy, and their children, Jim Jr., Keith, and Catherine have been very good friends who gave me much needed comfort, support, and refuge during a difficult time in my life when I was a confused young man on my way to Viet Nam in 1967.
Late in life Jim took up sculpting and collected walnut from all over western Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley where he lived. In 2008, he passed away. Some of his beautiful wood has been passed on to me. I hope I do it justice. Most of the pieces in my Shiva series have been horizontal. This is my first with a vertical thrust.
