Shipyard Creek Cherry
I have called this wood Shipyard Creek Cherry because the massive tree (30” mbh) grew near the marsh along the salt water creek of that name. Those familiar with Savannah might know that a small shipyard was located on this creek in the 1730s, hence the name. I live on the other side of the creek and every day look out across an incredible expanse of marsh to the spot where this majestic tree once lived.
Over the last two years I have carved twenty-five or so pieces with either spiraling-regular or random-organic elements radiating vertically or horizontally from the center. The radiating elements have never been connected at their tips. Several people have asked why I don’t ever make them connected. In this piece I finally did.
